Checking Clean Vehicle Credit Qualification

Do not rely on a static model list

For a vehicle acquired by the deadline, qualification depends on the specific vehicle and transaction. A model name alone does not establish a credit amount or buyer eligibility. Use the IRS guidance for new vehicles or used vehicles and the applicable vehicle lookup linked there.

Documents to check

Review your acquisition contract and payment records, the vehicle identification number (VIN), window sticker where applicable, and the seller’s time-of-sale report. The IRS says the seller must report required information to both the buyer and the IRS; see its seller requirements.

New vehicle qualification includes a price cap based on the vehicle category, final assembly and other requirements. Used vehicle rules are different and include sale-price, model-year and sale-history requirements. Consult the linked IRS guidance and a qualified tax professional for the full rules.
